Firefighting
and farming are two jobs most people don’t connect, but Gerard
T. Nevins did both with gusto. For 18 years, Nevins fought fires in Midtown
Manhattan. He was stationed at Rescue 1. But when he was not on the job,
he raised pigs, goats and chickens and sold fresh eggs from his small farm
in Campbell Hall, N.Y. His co-workers in the fire department knew him as
a man who disliked take-out meals. For Nevins, 46, cooking a meal at home
helped family bonding. Nevins was a devoted husband to his wife Marie of
20 years and together they had two sons, Daniel, 7, and Andrew, 5. Marie
said it was love at first sight when she met Gerard in 1979. Gerry, as he
was known, received medals and awards for his heroism, including being named
firefighter of the year in 2001. —-Nick Politi (The Morning Call) (Newsday)
