For 38-year-old Salvatore Calabro, firefighting was the realization of a lifelong dream. He loved his country and was fascinated by its heroes. On Sept. 11, he became one of them. He responded to the emergency with seven of his comrades from Ladder Co. 101. He was wearing an American flag patch on his uniform when he died. Called an "unbelievable dad" by his wife Francis, he most enjoyed watching his two children, 4-year-old Daniel and 2-year-old Alexander James, grow up.Salvatore Calabro was a firefighter who loved to read about the history andheroes of World War II and the Vietnam War. Always patriotic, he was wearing an American flagpatch on his uniform when he responded to the World Trade Center attacks. “The flag was on hisuniform sleeve and his turnout coat.He was a real American,” said his wife, Francine. A 14-year veteran of the Fire Department, heloved his job but he was happiest watching his young sons grow up.
