American Hero: Salvatore Calabro
He was a hero from the time he stepped onto this Earth. An Angel never meant
to be here, and the funny part was we all knew it. My cousin was the type of
person who, in our walk through life we very seldom meet. If you were lucky
enough to have him touch your life in anyway you knew it. He was in no way
a self proclaimed martyr or hero. He never bragged, boasted or even spoke in
passing about any of his heroic deeds. He never put himself on a higher pedestal
than the average human being, although anyone who was blessed to know him knew
that HE was.... Sal in most ways was your average Joe, very hardworking and
diligent at every task but what made him so unique was his unbelievable gift
of totally mastering all his relationships through life. To his mom he was
a loving, caring and devoted son. To his brother he was the strength that bonded
them together. To his wife, nothing more needs to be said other than the fact
that, they were together for 17 years. To his sons he was their hero, teacher
and most of all their best friends. To me he was a VERY important link that
made our family complete. To be related to Sal at any level was an unrecognizable
gift from God. The one thing that brings me any consolation of such a wonderful
person is knowing that he died on that tragic day, Sept 11th, doing not only
what he was called to do but doing what he LOVED to do. Being a HERO, a RESCUER
and a SAVIOR. And although our hearts will be shattered FOREVER and our lives
are forever changed. I feel blessed that I was lucky enough to have you touch
my life even for a short period of time. I love you and miss you more than
any words could ever ever express :(
