John (Jack) Fanning Chief, Hazardous Materials Operations, New
York City Fire Department, New York
John
(Jack) Fanning was Chief of Hazardous Materials Operations
at the New York City Fire Department. In his thirty year career
Chief Fanning served in various units throughout the City. He
was the Commanding Officer of Hazardous Materials Co. 1 in the
early days of the unit and formalized many of the policies and
procedures still in place today. He was promoted to Battalion
Chief in 1994. He subsequently held the positions of Chief of
Technical Services and Chief of Fleet Services before returning
to Haz/Mat Operations to oversee the expansion of the FDNY's
Haz/Mat program and addressing the mounting needs of the Department's
emergency response to terrorism and weapons of mass destruction.
He was a task force leader of NY-TF1, New York City's Urban Search & Rescue
Team, and deployed with the Team to the Oklahoma City bombing
and Hurricane Marilyn in Puerto Rico. He likewise represented
the City on FEMA's Incident Support Team at the 1996 Summer Olympics
in Atlanta, Georgia.
