Proposed Memorial LocationBy Stephen Witt
Cross a memorial to the heroic Brooklyn firefighters who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the World Trade Center attack with a tribute to the Golden era of Brooklyn and what do you get?     The Ebbets Field Wall of Remembrance. The memorial is slated for he outside wall of KeySpan Park, home of the Brooklyn Cyclones, said Sol Moglen, President and founder of the Ebbets Field Wall of Remembrance Foundation. "It's really owned by the Parks Department but totally controlled by the Cyclones, “Moglen said. Moglen spent the first SO years of his life in Brooklyn and remains true to the borough. He got the idea for the wall from a childhood memory. As a kid, I remember a memorial wall in Brooklyn honoring the soldiers in World War 11 and I felt to honor the lost heroes of Brooklyn we should do something special” said Moglen. Moglen said the wall would honor the 106 firefighters lost from Brooklyn engine and ladder companies along with NYFD Chaplain Father Mychal Judge, who also lost his life in the destruction. The gray granite 20-foot by 12-foot wall will feature each firefighter's picture, laser engraved in granite. Moglen said. Their name will also be inscribed by ladder and engine company on the center of the wall, he added. Moglen said the design would include a six-foot bronze statue of two firefighters holding a fallen firefighter's hat.

Among the other noted people involved in seeing the memorial project through are NYFD Chaplain Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, Brooklyn Postmaster Joseph Lubrano, Brooklyn Cyclones General Manager, Mrs. Gil Hodges, wife of the Dodger great and Mary Ann Fontana, whose husband David Fontana died in the attack.

Moglen also wants to thank Peter Kasten with the U.S. Bronze Sign Company who is building the monument at cost, as well as KeySpan Energy Chairman and CEO Robert Catell and the Brooklyn Cyclones organization including general Manger Steve Cohen. Moglen said the organization is in the process of raising about S 140,000 to pay for the memorial. If all goes well it will be dedicated in late August or September, he added. "We are asking for your help in whatever amount that you can afford;' he said. "We are also in need of benefactors in the amount of $5,000 and each benefactor will be listed on a plaque to be permanently displayed at KeySpan Park" Moglen said the memorial also will help commemorate the golden age of Brooklyn when the beloved Dodgers lived in the hearts of so many of its residents. "The Ebbets Wall symbolizes the great era of Brooklyn and the spot where they chose to integrate baseball with Jackie Robinson in 1941;' Moglen said. "It was a wonderful era that Brooklyn fans remember as the glory days of Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Cyclones brought back some of that glory;' he added. People or organizations wishing to donate money to build the memorial can do so by sending a check or money order made out to Ebbets Field Wall of Remembrance to 2067 58th Street. Brooklyn. NY 11204.
