Richard Bruce Van Hine, 48, was a devout outdoorsman who left Bibles at shelters on the Appalachian Trail, where he often hiked. A resident of Greenwood Lake, N.Y., Van Hine was on duty at FDNY Squad 41 in the Bronx on Sept. 11 when he got the call that cost him his life doing the job he loved so much. Van Hine not only fought fires. He also taught at the Fire Department Training Academy at Randalls Island and was a member of the Special Operations Command. He and his family also served in ministry at the Warwick Valley Church of the Nazarene in Warwick, NY. He and his wife, Ann Collette, have two daughters, Emily Ann and Megan Joy.
