Donald Regan was an air-conditioning installer before joining the New York City Fire Department 17 years ago, and he kept his handy ways all the way from Engine 310 in Flatbush to Squad 41 in the Bronx to his rescue company six years ago. So when the dishwasher broke, the dryer went on the fritz, or firefighters wore out the steam machine they used to rid their pores of soot, Regan would be in there taking the machine apart, putting it back together, making it good as new, while they waited for the next alarm to sound. "Nothing's broken yet, thank God," said Greg Einsfeld, a company member who helped organize a memorial service for Regan Oct. 8. "There's a lot of people here that miss him." A Brooklyn native, Regan fell in love with his wife of 26 years, Theresa, over the bologna at the P & E Deli on Gerritsen Avenue by Marine Park. They had A quilt made in honor of Donald Reganfour kids before they moved to Pine Bush, upstate, in 1987: Shane, now 26, Jimmy, 23, Jill, 22, and Peter, 20. Regan won his share of citations and a department medal for bravery: "He had no problems getting in and getting his hands dirty," Einsfeld said. But the kids were what Regan thought about when his shift ended - especially playing baseball with the kids. He and his wife had their hands full when the children were on four different teams - the goal was to get to at least one inning of each kid's game - but when they were old enough to join an adult league, Regan had the delight of playing on the same team with them. "He was a simple guy," Einsfeld said. "He worked for his family."
