Firefighter Gave Kids Lessons About Safety

Sunday, September 30, 2001

Adam Rand was born in Bethpage and grew up in Bellmore, where he was a volunteer firefighter.

A graduate of John F. Kennedy High School, Rand, 30, became a career firefighter assigned to Squadron 288 in Maspeth, where he was specially trained to deal with hazardous materials.

He frequently lectured on fire safety to young children in the area.

He is believed to have died searching for civilians in the World Trade Center.

Rand was living with his parents, Mary Ann and James Rand, in Bellmore while searching for a home in New York City. He was an avid skier and scuba diver. And for three weeks before the Sept.11 attacks, he was a fiance. He had just become engaged to his longtime girlfriend, Fiona Conroy, 27.

Rand also is survived by his brother, James P. Rand, and his sister, Lisa Rand Meyer.
