Firefighter Helped Organize Charity Event Nov. 28, 2001

At 8 a.m. on On Sept. 11, William Edward McGinn, 43, called his wife, Anne, to tell her not to worry if he was unable to call until late in the day. He was expecting to take part in a daylong training drill on tanker explosions at the Fire Academy on Randall's Island. Instead, the member of Squad 18 in Manhattan was among the first rescuers to arrive at the scene of the World Trade Center disaster. He also had been looking forward to taking part in a charity event that evening that he helped to organize for the New York-Cornell Burn Center. Three of the four firefighters who were to take part in the charity event perished that day. As the father of Liam, 8, and Cordelia, 6, McGinn was active in the Parents Association in his children's school in Riverdale, N.Y. In addition to his wife and children, McGinn is survived by his mother, Joan McGinn; brother, Michael, and his sisters, Susan Bradley, Maureen DeAngelo, Sheila McGinn and Ellen Albro. --Compiled by Newsday
