28, 2001
At 8 a.m. on On Sept. 11, William Edward McGinn,

unable to call until late in the day. He was expecting to take
part in a daylong training drill on tanker explosions at the Fire
Academy on Randall's Island. Instead, the member of Squad 18 in
Manhattan was among the first rescuers to arrive at the scene
of the World Trade Center disaster. He also had been looking forward
to taking part in a charity event that evening that he helped
to organize for the New York-Cornell Burn Center. Three of the
four firefighters who were to take part in the charity event perished

active in the Parents Association in his children's school in
Riverdale, N.Y. In addition to his wife and children, McGinn is
survived by his mother, Joan McGinn; brother, Michael, and his
sisters, Susan Bradley, Maureen DeAngelo, Sheila McGinn and Ellen
