Charles
L. Kasper - A New York City firefighter for 28 years and recently
promoted to deputy chief with Rescue 1 Squad.
Deputy Fire Chief Kept Teaching Roots Nov. 28, 2001
Thirty
years ago Charles Kasper met Laureen Roman on a train to the Brooklyn
high schools where they both taught. Their marriage and partnership
ended on Sept. 11, when two hijacked airplanes crashed into the
World Trade Center. With a growing family to support, Kasper joined
the Fire Department in 1973. He served as chief of Battalions
23 and 21 in Staten Island before moving to the Special Operations
Command in Manhattan. Kasper, 54, also worked as an instructor
in the department. Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen announced
Kasper's promotion to deputy chief on Sept. 16, even though Kasper
was listed as missing. In addition to his wife Laureen, he is
survived by a son, Michael, 17, daughters Kara and Melissa, and
grandson Dylan, 1 1/2. --Compiled by Newsday
