Decorated
Firefighter Was Avid Runner.
Nov. 27, 2001 At 6:30 a.m. on Sept. 11, Jeffrey John Giordano
called his wife, Marie, from the firehouse to tell her to awaken
the children, son Nicholas, and daughters, Victoria and Alexandra.
He was going to be on TV with Larry Hoff of WB11 news in a fund-raising
promotion benefiting the Firefighters Burn Center Foundation and
the Widows and Orphans Fund, and he didn’t want his children to
miss it. Then, shortly after 9 a.m., he called back to say he
was on his way to the World Trade Center. That was the last time
his wife spoke to him. Giordano joined the fire department in
1987 and was assigned to Ladder Co. 3 from the start. The highly
decorated firefighter received the Albert Johnson Award for saving
two people trapped in a blazing building, and the Life Saving
Benevolent Society honored Giordano for diving into the East River
to save a man from drowning. He ran daily, logging more than 50,000
miles, and participated in more than 15 marathons. --Compiled
