John F. Ginley - Firefighter, Dad Followed In
the Family Tradition September 21, 2001
Firefighting is a tradition in John F. Ginley's
family. His father Joseph, of Suffern, served 20 years with Engine
8 in Manhattan. Three brothers are New York City firefighters:
Tim is with Engine 94 in the Bronx, Joe is with Ladder 19 in the
Bronx and Bob is an Engine 307 lieutenant in Queens. Two cousins
are also city firefighters. Ginley, 37, was born and raised in
upstate Suffern. He graduated Suffern High School in 1982. After
attending Rockland Community College, he joined the New York City
Fire Department. For 13 years, he was a firefighter with Ladder
37 in the Bronx, before being promoted to lieutenant in Engine
40, where he worked for three years. He was on the list for captain.
It is believed he was searching for civilians when the trade center
collapsed. Ginley, of Warwick, is also survived by his wife, April;
a daughter, Taylor, 9, and a son, Connor, 7; another brother,
Pat, of Warwick, and his mother, Elizabeth. --Kathryn Wellin (Newsday)
