John Fischer was posthumously promoted to the rank of captain
following the World Trade Center disaster. An 18-year fire veteran,
his company was one of the first to respond to the attacks. Fischer
was a dedicated family man, who was active in his children's lives,
coaching them in sports and attending their games. "He thought
the world of his wife and his kids. His days off were arranged
around his kids' schedules," said longtime friend Michael Toal.
When Fischer coached, everyone got to play, said his wife, Jean.
"He never cared if the kids won the game," she said. "He was more
interested in how they grew up, knowing right from wrong, being
able to make decisions." --The Associated Press
