Brethel L-24, FDNY - Deceased Daniel J. Brethel, Captain of the New York City Fire Department with Ladder 24 at the age of 43, was killed at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Capt. Daniel Brethel, a Long Island father of two little girls and a well-loved man who held medals for bravery. He was the FDNY's expert on Penn Station, the Empire State Building and Madison Square Garden. Capt. Brethel drove Father Mychael Judge to the WTC. Brethel was at the base of the tower with Firefighter Michael Weinberg when the building began to collapse. Witnesses saw Captain Brethel grab Weinberg in an attempt to protect him and they dove for cover under a fire truck.
