Jeffrey James Olsen was a firefighter who became a hero before the Sept. 11attacks, said his mother, Carol Olsen. He recently received a commendation for helping torescue a family from their burning Brooklyn apartment. He also had donated bone marrow to a15-year-old boy he didn’t know. “He was our hero before September 11th,” his mother said.Olsen’s wife, Denise, said her husband was a “totally devoted father” to his three children.He would take them fishing and camping and enjoyed doing his three-year-old daughter’s hair.“I tell my children that he is a hero” and, she added, that more lives would have been lost inthe disaster “if the firemen didn’t do such an incredible job.” --The Associated Press
