Lived Childhood Dream Nov. 28, 2001
David LaForge’s childhood dream was to fight fires. As a child
he would pretend to rescue people. The 24-year veteran of the
New York City Fire Department died living out that dream. LaForge,
50, had finished his shift at Ladder 20 in Manhattan on Sept.
11. But when the call came from the World Trade Center, he jumped
in a fire engine and raced downtown. LaForge was seen last on
the 35th floor of Tower One, helping others get to safety, and
remains one of the missing from the attack. The Staten Island
resident is survived by his mother, Ethel, and father, James,
a sister, Jane, and cousin, Dr. Robert Malokie. --Compiled by
