A Gift of Music and Laughter
Nov.28, 2001
Friends of Richard John Kelly Jr., 50, remember the music and the laughter. The
Staten Island resident was known for playing the "boom bah" -- an odd musical
contraption that resembles a pogo stick with cymbals, a cow bell and other percussive
instruments attached -- at firehouse functions. Kelly had just celebrated his
24th anniversary with the New York City Fire Department and was the senior member
at Ladder 11, Manhattan. He was among three firefighters in his unit who never
returned after responding to the World Trade Center attack. Above all, Kelly
is remembered as a family man who enjoyed spending time with his wife Carolyn
and son, Michael.
