Not
Long on the Job Dec. 6, 2001
Before they even get to a fire, newcomers to the New York Fire
Department are forced to show their backbone. If they can't
take a ribbing by those who've been in uniform longer, then
they might be too thin-skinned for the job. They say "probie"
Karl Joseph seemed to have the right stuff. The 25-year-old
Brooklynite knew how to shrug off the teasing of veteran members
of Engine Company 207 with a big laugh. And, once at a fire
scene, Joseph was similarly gifted. Joseph was a Brooklyn firefighter
in Division 11, Battalion 31. -- Compiled by Newsday
