Firefighter Was Also Gifted Musician Nov. 28, 2001
After Stephen Harrell attended the funeral of another firefighter, he was so moved he wrote a song. The lyrics told of the people and children the fireman left behind. Now the song could be about Harrell’s own family and friends. As the lieutenant on duty Sept. 11 at Ladder Co. 10, located across from the World Trade Center, Harrell, 44, and his fellow firefighters were among the first to respond to the attack on Tower One. His brother Harvey, 49, was a lieutenant with Rescue Co. 5. Neither survived the attacks. On his wedding day, Stephen sang Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight" to his bride, Meghan, in front of all the guests. Before their daughter, Holly Rae, was born, he was a member of many rock 'n' roll bands -- singing and playing the saxophone. --Compiled by Newsday

Stephen Gary Harrell was a New York City firefighter who lovedmusic. His dream was to have one of his songs recorded professionally, said his wife, Meghan. Harrell made amateur recordings of many of his songs and now they are something his family has to hold on to. “Having part of him -— even if it is just his voice -— really helps. It will helpto carry on his memory for our daughter,” his wife said. Harrell’s 49-year-old brother,Harvey, a New York Fire Department lieutenant, also was killed in the World Trade Centerdisaster. --The Associated Press
