FDNY Lieutenant Was Supposed to Be at Fire School Nov. 28, 2001
Harvey Harrell Jr., 49, was a fire lieutenant, hazardous waste
responder and rescue diver who inspired his younger brother
Stephen to become a firefighter. Both brothers perished trying
to save others trapped in the World Trade Center. During his
22 years with the FDNY, Harrell was involved with many major
emergency operations. He was among those who responded to the
World Trade Center bombing in 1993. In 1996, when TWA Flight
800 crashed off Long Island, he was called away from vacation
to work as a rescue diver. On Sept. 11, Harrell was supposed
to be in a fire department training class. His wife, Rachel,
doesn’t know how he found out about the World Trade Center emergency,
but she believes he made his way to the station and jumped on
the truck before it left the firehouse. Harrell was the father
of two daughters, Marissa and Elyse. He and his wife would have
celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary on Sept. 18. --Compiled
