Firefighter Michael BoyleMichael Boyle, a firefighter for the New York Fire Department, joined the department in 1996 and hoped to be president of the firefighters union one day, as his father once was. James Boyle, a retired firefighter who was president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association from 1983 to 1986 and again from 1990 to 1993, spoke to his son briefly the morning of Sept. 11, then set out on foot from Brooklyn to the World Trade Center after the second hijacked jet struck. He was about two blocks away when Tower 2 collapsed. “It looked like it was 10 o’clock at night and I realized it would be a miracle if he was alive,” Boyle said.
